Dessie Leah West Lay age 92, formerly of Brush Creek, was born on September 11, 1921 in Knox County, Kentucky. She was a daughter of the late Sylvester Patrick (Pad) West and Pernie Perkins West. Dessie died Thursday, January 30, 2014 in the Baptist Health Corbin. She was a member of the Turkey Creek Baptist Church. On March 17, 1941, she united in marriage to Richard Lonzo
"Bon" Lay. Along with her parents, Dessie was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, seven brothers; Renzo, Clarence Daris, Jake Albert, Carl Burton Charlie, J.T. and Floyd West; her sister, Mary Edith West Logan; and a infant grandson; Richard Lonzo Lay III; and son-in-law; James Thomas Copeland.
Dessie is survived by one son; Richard Lonzo Lay Jr. and wife, Michelle of Marion, Ohio; four daughters; Joann Copeland of Gray; Mary Belle Torres of Frankfort, Kentucky; Bonnie Lou Moore and husband, Wayne of Corbin; and Lois Riley and husband, Norman of Dayton, Ohio; her ten grandchildren; Susan Durham, Melissa Copeland Carrol and husband, Danny, Jimmy Copeland, Regina Martin Sims and husband, Steve, Aretha Martin Smith and husband, Leslie, David Richard Wilder, David Allen Lay and wife, Terry, Jeffery Scott Lay and wife, Jill, Ronda Moore Gambrel and Michelle Moore Broughton and husband, Mike; great grandchildren; Lauren Ashley Carrol, William Matthew Copeland, Steven Grant Sims, Franchesca Marie Hockensmith, Olivia Elaine Smith, Amanda Danielle Warren, Rebecca Desirae Warren, Victoria Lynn Warren, Christian Faith Broughton, Zackery Michael Broughton, Katelyn Joan Lay, Aaron Xavier Lay,Luke David Lay and Jenna Susann Lay; several great great grandchildren; and her sister; Stella Rose of Lexington, Kentucky.
Funeral Services for Dessie Leah West Lay will be conducted in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel, Sunday, February 2, 2014 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Eli Broughton and Michael Broughton officiating. Burial will follow in the Candle Ridge Cemetery at Gray, with grandsons and great grandsons serving as pallbearers. The family have requested contributions may be made to Saint Jude Childrens Research Hospital in loving memory of Dessie Leah West Lay. Friends will be received at the Hopper Funeral Home Saturday after 6:00 pm and Sunday after 10:00 am until the funeral hour at 2:00 pm Hopper Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
