Douglas Michael Swafford, age 68 of Cannon, Kentucky, passed away at his home on Monday, June 27, 2016. He was the son of the late Criss and Ann Mays Swafford, born to them on December 19, 1947 in Heidrick, Kentucky.
On May 19, 1973 he was united in marriage to Rita Disney and to this union, two children were born. Doug worked as a heavy equipment operator for many years before becoming employed by the Knox County Board of Education where he retired in 2006. He served his country in the Kentucky National Guard from 1966 to 1973. He was a member of the Heidrick Holiness Church and was baptized at the Gray Pentecostal Church in 1976.
Doug enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and especially his five grandchildren, Caitlin, Mia, Michael, Kylie and Mylie who he loved with all of his heart. They were his life.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters: Lorena Sue Bingham and Barbara Ann Doughtery. His brothers, Rev. Arvis Swafford, Dallas Swafford and wife Cloeva Swafford.
Doug is survived by his wife, Rita Swafford and their daughter Kara Ann Kilgore and husband Brian, of Heidrick: His son, Michael Reid Swafford and wife Maria of Bryants Store. His five grandchildren Caitlin Brianna Nichole Pietrangelo, Mia Jade Swafford, Michael Reid Swafford II, Kylie Marie Kilgore and Mylie Jai Swafford. His sisters, Aileen Woolum and husband Roy of Hopkinsville, Iona Jean (Jip) Tuggle and husband Randall (Hoss) of Heidrick. His brother, Bill Swafford and wife Tami of Ormond Beach, Florida and a sister, Claudette Swafford Scalf of Barbourville.
Funeral services for Douglas Michael Swafford will be conducted in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, July 1, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Fred Disney and Rev. Landon Sexton officiating. Burial will follow in the McWilliams Cemetery at Cannon with Rodney Swafford, Sam Swafford, Tim Swafford, Kyle Woolum, Kevin Swafford, Bradley Swafford , Dr. Barry Bingham and Michael Reid Swafford II serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Hasni, Dr. Lohe, and Dr. Garg; The American Renal Dialysis Pineville Clinic employees: Lisa, Vickie, Michelle, Karen, Christy, Jake, Trena, Kelly, David, Mary, Tony and Matt; His special friends from the dialysis clinic; Nick and Norma; E.J. and Terry, Orville and Vickie; All dialysis patients at the American Renal Dialysis Pineville Clinic; Calvin Manis, Parkway Pharmacy employees and members of Doug's childhood community of Heidrick, Kentucky.
Friends will be received at the Hopper Funeral Home on Thursday, June 30, 2016 after 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. and on Friday, after 11:00 A.M. until the funeral hour at 1:00 P.M.
