Mr. Homer Lee Jackson, age 94, of Barbourville, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019, at his home. He was the son of the late Elbert Lee "Ebb" and Ruby Fannon Jackson, born on July 15, 1924, in the community of Coalport in Knox County Kentucky. He was one of thirteen children. As a young man, Homer Lee served his nation in the US Army.

Upon Marriage, Homer Lee and Virginia, like many others during that time, left Barbourville to travel to Lima, Ohio to seek job opportunities but quickly realized that they belonged back home in Knox County. After returning home, Homer Lee worked as a Coal Miner and in the evenings he performed, singing and playing guitar, with a country music band. During one of the band performances, Mr. Dwight Brown, owner of WBVL Radio Station, recognized the talent of Homer Lee and his exceptional voice for the radio business and offered him a job as DJ of the station. From there, Homer Lee, quickly became a household name as he was promoted to manager of the station and was well known for signing on every morning at 5:00 AM and saying "I'm Homer Lee and you know who you are". One of the highlights of his radio career was that he was chosen as DJ USA in Nashville. With this recognition, he was given the opportunity to travel to Nashville where he interviewed many country music legends such as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and Loretta Lynn just to name a few.
While working at the radio station he gained the trust and respect of many Knox Countians which gave him the opportunity to venture into the political arena. He was very successful in his political endeavors as he served one term as Knox County Magistrate and two terms as Knox County Judge. He must have won over many people as his politics were Democratic in a Republican county. He was a proud servant of Knox County and loved his people.
For nearly 60 years, Homer Lee was well known for his variety show called "Homer Lee's Old Time Show" which was held annually during the Daniel Boone Festival.
He proudly served on the Cumberland Valley Area Development District for over 35 years. He was a lifetime member of the Daniel Boone Festival Committee, chosen as Man of the Year in 1980, and also served as Daniel Boone Parade Grand Marshall in 2004. These are just a few of his achievements.
