Jewel Miracle Syme, age 96, died Saturday, February 1, 2014 in Arbor Oaks assisted living facility in Greenacres, Florida.

She was born in Trosper, KY to John F. Miracle and Matilda Baird Miracle on December 14, 1917; the first of ten children.
As a young lady, she attended and graduated from Knox County High School in 1937. Shortly thereafter she began a long teaching career with Knox County, beginning as a one-room school teacher at Coal Port, KY. in 1940.

In the early 1940's she met her future husband, Gerald, at a party in Warren, KY. They married in October, 1942 at Trosper, KY. To that marriage was born their first daughter, Geraldine, in February, 1944. In September, 1948, their second daughter, Phyllis Jean, was born.

While continuing her teaching career, Jewel received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Union College, Barbourville, KY in 1952. Continuing with teaching, she also improved her own education with a Master's Degree in elementary education from the University of Kentucky and advanced studies in school administration, also at the same university.

In 1979, after thirty-nine years of teaching, she and her husband, also a teacher, retired to Taylor, MI to be closer to their children and grandchildren where they had all moved for work in the late 1960's.

As time passed, she and Gerald moved from their home in Taylor to an assisted living facility in Allen Park, MI where they resided until 2001, after which they made a move to Florida.

In addition to her parents, Jewel is preceded in death by her daughter, Geraldine Black (2000), her husband, Gerald (2004) plus three brothers: John Jr., Herbert and Herman; two sisters, Charlene Vise and Martha Belle Hill.

Jewel is survived by two brothers: Beverly and his wife, Hope, and Jesse and his wife, Willie; two sisters, Ruby Smith and Betty Jo King and husband, John; daughter, Phyllis and her husband, Dale Olmstead along with their two sons, Dale, Jr. (Ed) and Aaron and his wife, Laurie, and their children, Amber Michelle Barth and Devin Gerald. Also surviving are Geraldine's husband, James C. Black, Jr., their daughter, Kimberly Kaye, her husband, John McDonald and their two sons, Sean and Conner, plus many nieces and nephews.

Jewel will be remembered for the many family get-togethers on Sunday after church and various holidays plus her very detailed, many times, most interesting, story-telling abilities.
