Obituary

Kathy Sue Johnson Garland, age 63, of Barbourville, died Sunday, June 8, 2014 at her home. She was a daughter of the late Ervin (Slick) and Sue Tye Johnson, born to them on January 23, 1951 in Barbourville.

Kathy Sue was a well known Knox County Beautician who owned and operated the Cut & Curl Hair Salon for many years; a well known Knox County Homemaker; a member of the Scalf Chapel Pentecostal Church; a member of the Junior Women's Study Club of Barbourville; a Barbourville High School Cheerleading Sponsor for over 20 years; an avid Race Car and NASCAR fan; and she loved Kentucky Wildcat Basketball, and Barbourville High Basketball.

On May 29, 1968, she united in marriage to Jerry Wayne Garland, and to this union three children: Donna Rejai, Becky Sue and Jerry Wayne
II were born.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother: Ervin (Slick) and Sue Tye Johnson; her husband: Jerry Wayne Garland on May 10, 2009; her granddaughter: Sydni Elizabeth Kathyren Corey; her father-in-law and mother-in-law: Beckham and Sydna Garland; her grandfather and grandmother: William Burnside Tye and Gerald "Grandy" Tye; her uncle: John Tye; her aunts: Mary Tye Hendricks and George Ann Tye.

She is survived by her loving family: Her three children: Donna Rejai (Garland) Corey and husband, Jeff of Bimble; Becky Sue (Garland) Carr and husband, A.J. of Bimble; and Jerry Wayne Garland II and wife, Crystal of Bimble.
Her grandchildren: William Jeremy Micah Corey and his fiance' Samantha Creasy, Jakob Sawyer Charles Corey, Marlee Kate Miller, John Kevin Grant Miller, Jayci Elizabeth Rajai Corey, Jakob Daniel Garland; and her step-grandchildren: Lexi Carr, Blakley Carr and Jacob Carr.
Her very best friend: Dolly Sue.
Her five brothers and sisters: Mike Johnson of Barbourville; Pat (Johnson) Phipps and husband, Ron of Barbourville; Jackie (Johnson) Bargo and husband, Denny of Boone Height; Jerry Johnson and wife, Linda of Gray; and Cecil Johnson of Barbourville.
A very special first cousin: Debbie Tye Gray and husband, Jimmy of Barbourville; her uncles and aunts: Bill Tye and wife, Arawana Tye of Mount Sterling, Ohio, Jean Tye Strong and husband, Jimmy of Barbourville, Jim Tye and wife, Wilma of Barbourville, Charlie Tye and wife, Debbie of Barbourville, Shirley Tye of Barbourville, and Doug Hendricks of Mills River, North Carolina; a sister in law, Marie Mills of Heidrick; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends to mourn her passing.

Funeral Services for Kathy Sue Johnson Garland will be conducted in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. David Barnard, Rev. Eli Broughton and Rev. Denvil Taylor officiating.
Burial will follow in the Hawn Cemetery at Hinkle in Knox County.
Those serving as Pallbearers will be: Micah Corey, Sawyer Corey, Jeff Corey, A.J. Carr, Grant Miller, Jakob Garland, Jacob Carr, Mike Johnson, Jerry Johnson and Cecil Johnson.
Those serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be: The Barbourville Police Department, Knox County EMS, Barbourville Fire Department, Kentucky State Police, her very large extended family, all employees of the G & M Oil Corporation, Garlands Restaurants, and Mountain Ridge Drilling Company.

The Garland family will receive friends at the Hopper Funeral Home after 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, and on Wednesday after 9:00 A.M. until the funeral hour.

Hopper Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
