Obituary

Leonard Ray Smith, age 85, of Flat Lick, died Saturday, March 15, 2014, in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

He was a son of the late Burchell and Maude Smith, born to them on December 29, 1928, in Letcher County at Neon, Kentucky. Mr. Smith owned and operated a well-known Knox County trucking business, delivering mining supplies.  Mr. Smith was a member of the Hinkle Branch Holiness Church.  On October 30, 1948, he united in marriage to Mary Frances (Townsley) Smith, and to this union three children:  Patty Lynn, Larry Ray, and Brenda Joyce, were born. He was preceded in death by his parents: Burchell and Maude Smith; his loving wife of almost 62 years Mary Frances Townsley Smith on September 5, 2010;  his daughter, Patty Lynn Smith; his brother, James Smith; and a brother-in-law, Coleman Messer.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving family:  his son, Larry Ray Smith and wife, Pansy of Flat Lick; his daughter, Brenda Joyce Lawson and husband, Jack of Flat Lick; his grandchildren:  Larry Ray Smith Jr. and wife, Shannon; Jack Lawson Jr.; Jennifer Lynn Ledford and husband, Jeff; Amy Joyce Mills; and Mary Jeanette Smith and husband, James; his great grandchildren:  Patty Joyce Mills, Mary Elizabeth Mills, Joshua Colby Ledford, Jordan Tyler Smith, Kristen Hope Ledford, Emily Faith Mills, Zachary Chase Smith, and Evan Dakota Smith; his brothers and sisters:  Rev. B. R. Smith and wife, Cledia of Flat Lick;  Doris Broughton Harp of Barbourville;  Rev. William Clifford Smith and wife, Shirley of Clarksville, Tennessee;  Dorothy Messer of Hazel Park, Michigan;  Paul Smith and wife, Zelma of Orlando, Florida;  Aaron Smith and wife, Mabel of Murfreesboro, Tennessee;  Geneva Horner and husband, David of Florida;  Betty Deloris Miracle and husband, Charles of Knoxville, Tennessee;  Curtis Harold Smith of Corbin;  and Harvey Roy Smith and wife, Emma Lee of Bimble;  and a host of nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.

Funeral Services for Leonard Ray Smith will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 19, 2014, in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Bright, Rev. B. R. Smith, and Mike Corey officiating.  Burial will follow in the Henry Mills Cemetery at Hammond.  Those serving as Pallbearers will be:  Colby Ledford, Nelson Messer, Matt Smith, Jordan Smith, Zach Smith,  Willis Smith, C. J. Mills, Jacob Hensley, Jack Nunley and Ronnie Townsley.  Those serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be:  the Knox County EMS; the Helicopter Flight Crew; the Trauma Staff at UK Medical Center; Dr. Steven K. Morgan; Dr. Talmadge V. Hays;  Steve and Linda Warren; and Dr. Pat Brock.

The family of Leonard Ray Smith will receive friends at the Hopper Funeral Home after 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday; and after 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, until the funeral hour of 2:00 P.M.

Hopper Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
