Obituary

Barbourville, Ky. - Neva Hammons Glasscock Kaplan lived a full 90 years before her passing on March 9, 2024. Born to Esceline Bargo Hammons Hawkins and Jeff Hammons on May 31, 1933, in Dewitt, Kentucky.

Neva is survived by her daughters, Tarah-Lee Kaplan of Barbourville, Kentucky and Patricia Ann Glasscock Drake of Canton, Michigan and two cherished grandchildren, Matthew Marvin Drake, and Megan Elizabeth Drake Stillman.  A sister, Irma Hammons Hubbs of Florida, also survives Neva. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Robert Kaplan, her son, Dennis Michael Glasscock, her parents, and siblings Opal Hammons Slusher, Doris Hammons Mitchell, and O.J. Hammons.

Neva married at the age of seventeen to Vernon Thomas Glasscock and they remained married for 20 years, raising their two children, Dennis, and Patricia, in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. Neva obtained a bachelor's degree at Union College. Later accomplishing her master's degree and a Doctorate in Education at Wayne State University. Neva worked many years in the field of education holding different positions throughout her career including as a dedicated elementary teacher, school librarian, and principal.

Neva married her second husband, Milton Robert Kaplan in 1975. Their daughter, Tarah-Lee, was born in 1977 and since required their loving care. Milton's career with Warner-Lambert led them to relocate to New Jersey. Subsequently they moved to San Antonio, Texas where, together, they founded Micro-Research, a medical innovation company. They retired to Barbourville, Kentucky in 1993. She loved Barbourville. No matter where she lived, she always called Barbourville her home. Neva remained deeply attentive to the care of her daughter, Tarah-Lee. She and Milton always hoped that their community would uplift and embrace their daughter.

A woman of deep faith and studious in the Judeo-Christian faith, Neva was passionate in her love of God and belief in the hereafter. She read her Bible and prayed daily. Her religious journey led her through a Baptist upbringing to an exploration of Reformed Judaism to a return to Jesus Christ and following of Evangelical teachings. Neva was spirited, brilliant, beautiful, and loyal and will be remembered as such by all who knew and loved her.

Presently, there are no planned services. A Prayer Service will be held for Neva in the future. Service details will be announced here upon confirmation.
