R.P. Gambrel age 73, of Hinkle Branch, was born in Knox County, Kentucky on January 28, 1940. He was a son of the late Bertha Mills Gambrel and James Gambrel. R.P. died Wednesday, November 20, 2013 in the Knox County Hospital. He was a member of the Dewitt Baptist Church, was a retired coal miner, was a member of the AARP and former member of the southern labor union. On December 17, 1958, he united in marriage to Susan Gambrel and to this union three children were born. Along with his parents, R.P. was preceded in death by; seven brothers; J.B. Gambrel, Obie Gambrel, Crit Gambrel, Anthony Gambrel, Virgil Gambrel, Matthew Gambrel and Ernest Gambrel; five sisters; Mary Gambrel Mills, Darlene Gambrel Mills, Martha, Vaslene,and Imogene Gambrel.
R.P. is survived by his wife, Susan Gambrel of Hinkle Branch; his children; Rita Faye Dunford of Corbin; Dianna Kaye Merida of Barbourville and Curtis Gambrel of Flat Lick; his four grandchildren; Wendy Martin, Crystal Merida; Chrissy Merida and Rodney Bargo; his five great grandchildren and one sister; Mildred Brown.
Funeral Services for R.P. Gambrel will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Jay Barnett and Rev. Donnie Mills officiating. Burial will follow in the Binghamtown Cemetery at Dewitt, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Friends will be received at the Hopper Funeral Home, Saturday after 12:00 noon until the funeral hour at 1:00 pm. Hopper Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
