Obituary

S.J. Hammons age 80 of Barbourville was born on April 29, 1933 in Knox County, Kentucky. He was a son of the late Matt Hammons and Jean Hubbard Hammons. S.J. died Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at his home. He was a retired breadman for the Kerns and Butternut Company and was a United States Army Veteran, having served during the Korean War. S.J. as a child attended the Heidrck Holiness Church. On April 29, 1982, he united in marriage to Mary Helton. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by: a step-son, Jimmy Lee Scalf; sisters; Florence Owens and Joyce Hammons; brothers; Aubrey and Ralph Hammons; brothers-in-law; Stan Borowski, Parrom Owens, Calvin Valentine and Vencil Ledington.

S.J. is survived by his loving wife, Mary Hammons of Barbourville; his daughters; Alana K. Hammons Henson and husband, Larry Henson of Barbourville and Leasa Hammons of Barbourville; his grandchildren; Olivia, Ian and Zachary; Dr. Robert Dunnaway and Will Dunnaway who were very dear to S.J. and were like grandsons to him; great grandchildren; Allie, Sophie and Connor; Sisters; Vivian Borowski of Brighton, Michigan; Ailene Combs and husband, Carl of Kaleva, Michigan; Gereldean Brewer and husband, Larry of Warren, Michigan; Jane Dunning and husband, Larry of Warren, Michigan; Margaret Callebs and husband, Troy of Ferndale, Michigan; brothers; Don Hammons and wife, Faye of Heidrick; Dave Hammons and wife, Jan of Heidrick; Homer Hammons and wife, Evelyn of Corbin; a very special aunt: Esther Hammons of Heidrick; his dear sister-in-law; Jeanie Smith of London; best friends; Virgil and Carol Allen of Barbourville; and he leaves many loving nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Funeral Services for S.J. Hammons will be conducted, Friday, December 13, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Donnie "Duke" Hammons officiating. Burial will follow in the Doolin Cemetery at Heidrick, with Virgil Allen, Adam Smith, Zachary Henson, Jonathan Hammons, James Holstein Dr. Robert Dunnaway and Will Dunnaway serving as pallbearers. Friend will be received at the Hopper Funeral Home Thursday after 6:00 pm and Friday after 10:00 am until the funeral hour at 2:00 pm. Hopper Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
